The tree of the year 2018 is a species that is rather rarely represented in this country, but a tremendously impressive one. It came to Europe with the Romans. Its cultivation was established because of the durable wood, but mainly because of the nutritious fruits, which were the main food in the barren mountain regions of southern Europe until the 19th century. The "bread of the poor" was served roasted or boiled; ground into semolina or flour, it could be used to make polenta, cook soup or bake bread. Dried chestnuts and their flour could be stored for up to two years, so that poor harvests could be bridged. Today, the chestnut is a delicacy, as its nutritious, velvety flesh can only be obtained by hand.
